From 1 September 2026, online stores must provide a withdrawal button
A new requirement means that an online store must provide customers with a clearly visible and continuously accessible way to start the withdrawal process. The goal is to make cancelling a distance purchase and returning goods simple and understandable.
What the EU rules mean for an online store
The withdrawal function is more than a link to a returns policy. It must guide the customer through an active process in which the customer identifies the order, states the relevant withdrawal details, confirms the request and receives confirmation that the request has been submitted.
For Estonian merchants, the practical deadline referred to in the article is 1 September 2026. Store owners should review the checkout, account area, order emails and returns flow in good time so that the withdrawal option is easy to find and works on both desktop and mobile.
What information should be collected?
The form should collect only the information needed to identify the customer and order and to understand which goods or services the withdrawal concerns. The process should avoid unnecessary friction and should provide the customer with a durable confirmation after submission.
What should an online-store owner do?
Check whether your current platform already supports the required workflow, update the terms and privacy information where necessary, test the process from a customer's point of view and make sure the feature remains visible throughout the site. If your store requires a custom implementation, it should be added before the requirement becomes applicable.
